Submissions are now closed.
Deadline: December 22, 2023

The Utah Seismic Safety Commission is continuing its Student Grant Research Program for secondary students to create an opportunity to investigate seismic-related issues in Utah. The Commission envisions collaboration between students and faculty in developing projects. Areas of research include engineering, geology, emergency management, and government relations, to list a few. If you have an idea for a project and want some feedback, e-mail John Crofts (jcrofts@utah.gov). As long as your projects are seismic-related, the Commission is open to any project. There is a very broad area of research that will be accepted.

The Commission plans to award grants on a competitive basis. The deadline for proposals will be December 22, 2023. All work must be completed by the end of the 2024-2025 school year. The grants are based on reimbursement of expenses. This means the school will front the money for the projects and the Commission will reimburse them for all eligible expenses.

The Commission is committed to making this program a success. To that end, the Commission will be a resource to your students. The Commission is composed of engineers, architects, building officials, emergency managers, seismologists, geologists, and other professionals.

Proposals need to include the following:
  • Who is applying – Entire school, group within a school, or an individual student.
  • Area of research – Engineering, Geology, Emergency Management, Government Relations, etc.
  • Statement about the project
  • Approach to the project
  • What is the final product – a report, display, or something disaster-related. (e.g., securing furniture or heavy school equipment). Due at the end of the school year. Estimated Costs – itemize as best as you can. Remember you are reimbursed for eligible costs (those that can be reasonably applied to the project).

The Commission wishes to keep this application and grant simple; however, the proposals should be detailed enough that thoughtful and defensible decisions can be made on who receives grants.

Please submit all proposals to:

John Crofts – jcrofts@utah.gov

For any inquiries regarding the program, please reach out to John Crofts.
We appreciate your interest.
